San Gabriel Valley Newborn Photographer - Fresh48 with the Mars

Oh happy day! When one goes to visit a brand new little peanut who was born on the exact date of your husband's birth, one feels particularly excited about the shoot. Baby Zoe looks JUST like her papa, it was almost comical. And of course, dad's beyond taken with his new little princess. It was such a delight capturing baby Zoe in all her newness and even a bigger delight to watch first time parents interact with their newborns before they've gotten that practiced confidence. Another reason Fresh48's are a favorite session of mine.

San Gabriel Valley Newborn Photographer - Fresh48 with the Lees

I was just slightly more nervous photographing this hospital lifestyle session since dad takes pretty awesome photos himself. Lifestyle sessions are all about capturing candid moments and interactions. Fresh48 sessions, especially aim to capture those first few interactions you have with your brand new baby. Dad totally brought his camera too and was clicking away during the session. So of course, we had to get a photo with baby Cyan with dad's trusty side-kick. You are so loved little one and an absolute natural in front of the camera ;)

Gassy Baby? This MIGHT be why...

One of the main things I check for right before the shoot is if the baby's stomach is distended. To check, I gently place the base of my palm on the baby's stomach and give just the gentlest pressure, if the belly gives in to pressure, the baby is not gassy, if the belly feels quite hard like a very ripe tomato, the baby is quite possibly very gassy.

From the prospective of a newborn photographer, this just means that the baby won't be comfortable in certain poses. All this would mean is poses where the baby's feet are coming up over or under the belly will be skipped in flow posing.

From the prospective of a mom, a brand new, sleep deprived, going slightly crazy mama, this means a whole lot more. A gassy baby is a fussy baby and try as you might, it'll be very hard to calm the baby to go into any sort of uninterrupted sleep. Your baby could be experience gas for a number of reasons but if you are breastfeeding it can very well be related to your diet. Below I share my nursing guide that I send to all prospective clients to help avoid a gassy baby for the session. This, of course, is not an end all be all solution to your baby's discomfort, so definitely consult your pediatrician and doctor should the condition persist. In the meantime, check to see if you've ingested anything on the list and remove it from your diet immediately. It takes time for the food you eat to transfer to baby so give it 48 hours to adjust.

Oh and have you tried gripe water? This can help too. Please do plenty of research and consult your doctor before administering anything to your baby. LLP did not and does not have any medical training and the content of this article should not be taken as medical advice in anyway.

San Gabriel Valley Newborn Photographer - welcome baby Max!

When I think of Max, I think of a perfect looking baby. My clients all have gorgeous kids (it's my lot in life to be surrounded with cutie-pies) but Max really takes the cake. On top of that, he was also the perfect model, settled right away, fed only at the end, and barely made a peep his entire shoot. Mom again was trusting in allowing me to style the shoot completely and I decided to go earthy and organic and use browns and warmer richer colors for him.

Honestly though, is he not perfect?

As always, here is my blessing for you baby Max,

May you laugh at the days to come and may you never be without help when you need it. May you protect those you love with a ferocious passion and may you cultivate a determined spirit. May your outlook always remain optimistic and may your heart be filled with hope. May you feel peace, even in your darkest hours and cling unswervingly to a faith that can move mountains.

XO,
Lucy

San Gabriel Valley Newborn Photographer - Fresh48 with the Quintanillas

Max you're here! Max Q here is born to the Teen Ministry Leaders at the local church we attend and is born to a large crowd of adoring fans already. I, being their photographer, had the chance to meet him first of course. HA! Take that all you teens. Ah...good going Lucy, decades older and not a day more mature.

Max is as perfect as can be and I can't wait to see them shortly after for his newborn session. What is it with brand new babies and their incredible smell though? Makes being a professional next to impossible since the entire 30 minutes of shooting I was fighting off the urge to throw my camera aside as a distraction and run off with him into the sunset. See you soon little one!

San Gabriel Valley Newborn Photographer - welcome baby Avery!

Baby Avery...is one of those perfect looking babies, you know what I mean? She has a full head of dark hair and the most beautiful caramel skin tone. Everything, I mean, everything, looked good on her. But here's more, Avery was the most beautifully deep snoozer I've photographed this year. She just slept and slept and slept through the bum-up pose, the side lying, the chin-up, the taco, and on and on. Avery then slept through posing with her two big sisters who came in matching shirts! Oh Avery, you have my whole heart!

As always, here's my wish for you:

May you be the most loving, thoughtful, generous, and cheery little sister. May your older siblings praise you and celebrate you all the days of your life. May you grow up into a beautiful woman that I already see. May your inner beauty outshine that which passes with time.

XO,

Lucy

San Gabriel Valley Newborn Photographer - welcome baby Olivia!

I love the name Oliva...and I loved baby Olivia. Baby Olivia slept like a champ and was so good to Mike. Mike doesn't assist on all shoots but when he does, I pray that the babies are "nice". Even more exciting, Olivia let us VERY safely and via composite images, create the baby hanging portrait! Said portrait is now proudly adorning the wall of The Cradle Family. Now we talk about Olivia's mama...

Elizabeth is one of the completely effortlessly stunning women who completely came unprepared to the shoot (no makeup, casual clothing) But of course, I asked her to jump in for a few shots with her little because it would've been a shame to not capture this mother and her mini-me.

As always, here's my wish for you:

May you grow up to be just like your mama, beautiful, kind, devoted, down to earth, and wonderfully engaging. May you look at the world with patience and wonder, forgiving those who trespass against you and not sweating the small stuff. Laugh at the all the days to come.

Xo,
L

San Gabriel Valley Newborn Photographer - welcome baby Tyler!

Oh baby Ty...you are, and forever will, hold the most special place in my heart. Not just mine! Mike affectionally calls you by "dragon" baby. That dragon bonnet was made for you! The story is this, you see, I commissioned a line of Chinese themed props since so many of my clients are of Chinese descent. Then you walked in (ok you were carried in in your car seat) and totally modeled it to exactly how I had imagined it'd look. There was never a dragon like you again...

Thank you for being lovely, and cute, and sleepy, oh so sleepy! Thank you for being my "froggy" my dragon and my everything in between!

As always, here's my wish for you:

May you walk through life with dignity and kindness. May you always remember your roots and all those who loved and nurtured you. May roar a great big roar and swagger a great big swagger. May you take the world by storm!

XO,
Lucy (also a dragon, the ultimate dragon lady)

Community Over Competition

Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of “befriending” in a very loose but altogether heartwarming sense of the word, a few fellow newborn photographers. One is close, so close as to be considered a local competitor, while a few are geographically much farther. All have a singularly impressive thing in common: they’ve provided help and guidance as well as much needed encouragement.

Starting a small business is no easy task. No longer do I have the luxury of delegating any task or picking/choosing which project I’d like to involve myself. When you own a business, the work never stops. (blogpost on work/life balance post-public accounting coming soon) I’ve felt defeated and discouraged many times this year and have at times questioned if I’ve indeed made a wise decision to leave such a lucrative career. Words truly can’t describe how grateful I am for each of these women on this rocky journey this past year.

Thank you all for the ways you’ve guided my thinking, inspired my heart, helped my business, critiqued my work, shared your secrets, and cheered me on. I am endlessly grateful for you, however new that friendship may be. I hope this year brings you each amazing blessings professionally and personally. I am excited to watch your businesses grow. A fan/friend always. Thank you.
